Jams of the Weekend - 10-25-15

Hola amigos. I hope you're having a wonderful weekend full of pumpkin spice everything and making the most of a packer free Sunday.

It's kind of that fall time of the year where I feel anxious about all my decisions and the upcoming holidays, but I also feel weirdly calm because of how beautiful fall in Wisco is. Today's songs are a little more mellow and slow, but I love love them all the same. First is Julien Baker with "Something". Her repetition of something, anything, and anyone made me feel all the feels. Sometimes I get stuck on an idea of who someone is and fixate a little, I've been trying to get better and music helps.

Julien Baker - Something
"I can't think of anyone, anyone else/
I won't think of anyone else"

Wake Me - Bleachers

"Right from the start I knew/
You'd set a fire in me/
and I'd rather be sad with you/
Than anywhere away from you"

and last but not least on this train to soul town

Leave Your Lover - Sam Smith

"What use is money, when you need someone to hold?"

Until next week,

Jams of the Weekend - 10/18/2015

Hope you guys had a baller weekend, and P.S, GO PACK GO,  6-0! =)

First jam is Roll Away Your Stone, which is one of my favorite songs.  When it starts you think you're about to do an old timey dance and then all of a sudden you're shouting and stomping. Whenever I'm feeling a bit melancholy, Mumford helps, and this week I had a nice bout of insomnia so there was a lot of Mumford listening going on.

"'Cause you told me that I would find a hole/
Within the fragile substance of my soul/
And I have filled this void with things unreal/
And all the while my character it steals"

Roll Away Your Stone - Mumford & Sons

Next is "I'm Ready" - by AJR, It's pretty pop-catchy, but the real reason I keep listening is I'm a sucker for clapping and Sponge Bob.

I'm Ready - AJR

On that same pop note, one of my favorite overplayed radio artists is OneRepublic. I can relate to a lot of their songs, especially off their last album Native. The music video is kind of a tear jerker, because it starts off with Bryan who has cystic fibrosis, and the video shows his struggles but his hope for his life.

 I Lived - OneRepublic

Enjoy and adios!

Book Club Review: Far Far Away – Tom McNeal

“This is the strange and fateful tale or a boy, a girl, and an ancient ghost.”

Far Far Away begins with the meeting of our story teller, the ghost apparition of Jacob Grimm, of the famous brothers Grimm. Jacob is stuck in “Zwischenraum”, which translates to the space between. It’s his own personal hell he cannot escape until he discovers what’s holding him, his “the thing undone; unknown yet unmet desire.” In his travels to discover what that thing is, he meets Jeremy Johnson Johnson, an “Exceptional” who can hear ghosts talking. Jacob is led to Jeremy by a ghost he encounters in his travels. The ghost tells him of the boy who can hear ghosts, and also his knowledge of a man in the same town who is a “Finder of Occasions” who would bring harm to that boy without leaving any trace. Jacob sets off to find the Jeremy in the town of Never Better.

When Jacob meets Jeremy is a sort of town weirdo. At a young age he told people about the voices he could hear, and they thought he was crazy. In addition his mother has abandoned him and his father, leaving his father destroyed and unable to leave his bedroom. He retreats to his attic hideaway filled with fairy tales his mother left him. Jacob and Jeremy quickly bond and Jacob swears to protect Jeremy and find the Finder of Occasions. Jacob helps Jeremy study and live a quiet life until one day Ginger Boultinghouse enters the picture. Ginger encourages Jeremy to get out and have adventures, which sets into motion Jeremy’s own person fairy tale.

I really liked this book, because it wasn’t predicable to me. Jacob Grimm kept me waiting to see what would happen next, and the romance/friendship between Ginger and Jeremy wasn’t overdone. Fairy tales are always a plus to me, and besides that another main character is the town baker, so I was excited. It’s hard to talk about what else happens without giving anything away, but trust me when I say this is a great read.

Jams FOR the Weekend - 10/2/15

Hiya! This month I'm going to see the love of my life, Andrew McMahon, in concert so I though I'd check out the openers and highlight some of their best jams.

Opener 1.) The Griswalds.

Beware the Dog - The Griswalds.
I love any song that just repeats "now you're f'in crazyyy"

Opener/ I guess Co-Headliner 2.) New Politics

Harlem - New Politics

lastly opener 3.) Lolo. I couldn't find anything on spotify that I was into, but I know her from a Matt nathanson track that I love called "Headphones" the music video is a tearjerker, you've been warned. Matt joined the Starkey Hearing Foundation in Peru to help people with hearing loss, and people hearing for the first time or the first time in a long time makes you value your ears.

Headphones - Matt Nathanson feat. Lolo

Hope you enjoyed =)
